There is also a community of about 2,000 pieds noirs, descended from European settlers in France’s former North African colonies; some of them are prominent in anti-independence politics, including Pierre Maresca, a leader of the RPCR. Distinct from the Caldoches are those who were born in New Caledonia from families that had settled more recently, and are called simply Caledonians. At the last census in April 2025, New Caledonia had a population of 264,596, down from 271,407 at the September 2019 census, as people left the territory due to an economic crisis and recent unrest.
British explorer James Cook was one of the first Europeans to sight New Caledonia, on 4 September 1774, during his second voyage. The first settlements were concentrated around the coast and date back to the period between c. It offers the most panoramic and mesmerizing views of the ocean and island. This bay is the perfect place to lay on the sand, relax, and catch the flamboyant sunsets. Climbing those hills offers the most pristine and breathtaking views. It takes some time to get there by walking, so visiting the village by bike or car is advised.
Sailing Upi Bay on a traditional boat is a must-do on the Isle of Pines
- The service prioritizes fair play and data protection to provide users with a secure and trustworthy environment.
- There’s a fascinating island in the Pacific that many don’t know about.
- Sure, the crowds can be overwhelming, especially during peak season, but if you time your visit right, you’ll find pockets of tranquility amidst the buzz.
- On 16 May, three Kanak civilians, including two teenagers and a man, were killed in Nouméa by unidentified armed civilians, while on the same day, another gendarme died of accidental gunshot wounds inflicted by another member of the security forces.
- Famous for its spectacular beaches, lagoons, coral, palm trees, and soaring Araucaria pines, the island is unrivalled for its beauty in New Caledonia and arguably the South Pacific.
In the winter (from June to August) you should bring light clothes for the day, but don’t forget long sleeve clothes and possibly a light jacket for the evening; a light raincoat will also be needed. During this time, temperatures are already rising, and there’s little rain yet. The best time to visit New Caledonia is probably during October and November.

Vao is the main settlement and is a very small village located south east of the island. The beachside deck at Hotel Kou Bugny is great for a sunset beer – arrive early to get yourself a good spot and enjoy the gorgeous views. With these timings, day trips to the island are possible, however I’d recommend an overnight stay on the island – it’s just too peaceful and pretty to leave so soon! The ferry makes the return journey 3 times a week (Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday), leaving Noumea at 7am and leaving Isle of Pines at 5pm. I’d recommend booking as far in advance as possible to take advantage of their promotional fares, and to also avoid the flight you want selling out (they are very popular with Japanese day trippers). They fly around 9 times a day and the journey lasts about 30 minutes.
According to the 2019 census, the Kanak constitute 95% of the population in the Loyalty Islands Province, 72% in the North Province and 29% in the South Province. Finally, 2.1% of the population reported belonging to other communities to the exclusion of “Caledonian” (up from 1.3% at the 2014 census). 11.3% of the population reported belonging to multiple communities (mixed race) (up from 8.6% at the 2014 census). A further 7.5% of the population either self-identified as “Caledonian” or refused to declare an ethnic group (down from 9.9% at the 2014 census).

On 19 May, French High Commissioner Louis Le Franc announced that 600 security personnel were being deployed in an operation to regain control of the highway area between Nouméa and its international airport including removing roadblocks and debris. During Bastille Day on 14 July, Southern Province President Sonia Backès gave a controversial speech criticising the Nouméa Accord and advocating partitioning New Caledonia along provincial lines in light of the 2024 unrest. During a live event on the website X, anti-independence politician Deputy Nicolas Metzdorf, representative of New Caledonia’s 2nd constituency, called on President Emmanuel Macron to keep the electoral reform going as doing otherwise would be a “political and moral defeat for the Republic”. He also appealed to French President Emmanuel Macron to prioritise a comprehensive agreement between “all political leaders of New Caledonia, to pave the way for the archipelago’s long-term political future”. Meanwhile, the FLNKS called for “calm, peace, stability and reason”, the lifting of blockades and the withdrawal of the controversial French constitutional amendments.
This is a timeless GO-TO magazine for every vintage bride! In Earth’s geological past, there were times when it would have been possible to walk from New Caledonia down to New Zealand. Famous for its spectacular beaches, lagoons, coral, palm trees, and soaring Araucaria pines, the island is unrivalled for its beauty in New Caledonia and arguably the South Pacific. It is on the north side of the island – a bit too far to cycle from the other resorts (trust me – don’t attempt it) – so take a taxi or hire a car. I never got time to discover this gem unfortunately, as by the time I cycled to the nearby hotel (Le Meridien), it was time to leave again (lesson learned to plan properly). At it’s centre lies a ‘sacred rock’ called ‘La Rocher’ which you are not allowed to climb but you can canoe around.

Le Meridien Noumea & Ile des Pins + Paradis Ouvea
This wonderful trip takes in the hustle and bustle of Nouméa together with the beautiful islands of Ouvea and the Isle of Pines. Built in complete harmony with the idyllic surroundings and in full respect of the Melanesian traditions, Oure Tera Lodge offers a level of comfort and services of a 4 star hotel. L’Île-des-Pins, or Isle of Pines, is a small island east of the biggest island, Grand Terre, and is reachable by ferry or plane (a ferry round-trip, which I paid about 100 euros for, takes 2.5 hours each way). Within days I had met a lovely group of people who spoke in easy Franglish (but mostly French, which was great for practice) and with whom I explored the island’s treasures. There’s an emphasis on coy looks, playful gestures, and sometimes exaggerated expressions.

The lagoon and the surrounding New Caledonia Barrier Reef was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 for its exceptional beauty and marine biodiversity. The northern half of Poya, with the main settlement and most of the population, is part of the North Province, while the southern half of the commune, with only 210 inhabitants in 2019, is part of the South Province. On 16 September 2025, the New Caledonia Congress approved once again for the third time, another postponement, regarding the election within the territory.

Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. It was fully booked for our dates so I don’t have a personal experience to share. It’s not far from the airport though so you may have time for a visit before catching your flight back to Noumea. And we did not have many opportunities for hiking during the trip so it was good to exercise a bit! Well, the actual question is what is in excess… As it sometimes happens in popular natural places, mass tourism is not helping.
#6 Day trip to Amédée Island
This way, you can maximize your time while still soaking in the island’s laid-back charm. The Isle of Pines is a place where time feels fluid, like the gentle sway of palm trees in the breeze. This is your ticket to explore at your own pace. The island’s beauty unfolds as you approach, with lush greenery and turquoise waters.
Much of New Caledonia’s fauna present before human settlement is now extinct, including Sylviornis, a bird over a metre tall not closely related to any living species, and Meiolania, a giant horned turtle that diverged from living turtles during the Jurassic period. Objectives of the talks include a revised political framework for New Caledonia, potentially including greater autonomy and redesigned electoral rules, socioeconomic challenges, such as the nickel-dependent economy, youth employment, and post‑unrest recovery. Indulge in five-star luxury in New Caledonia and get up to $1000 in Bonus Value when you book a seven-night trip from $2,590 including flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
A police station and several other buildings were set alight across New Caledonia. On 23 June, riots broke out again in Nouméa, during which protesters set fire to the town hall of Koumac as well as several police vehicles, destroyed parts of Païta and set up roadblocks. On 19 June, authorities announced the arrest of 11 people, including Christian Tein, the leader of the pro-independence movement CCAT (Field Action Coordination Cell), on suspicion of instigating the violence. On 26 May, pro-independence leaders stated the goal of full independence from France and also advised rioters to loosen their grip on barricades to allow supplies to pass through while making it clear that ‘resistance’ would continue and barricades would remain in place.

From above, the lagoon curves through glowing shades of blue and green, set against the long mineral wall of the cliffs. In Ouvéa, the Lékiny cliffs create a striking setting where coral rock, crystal-clear water, and coconut-lined shores come together. Why Wadra Bay in Lifou is one of New Caledonia’s most romantic beach settings With its turquoise lagoon, wild shoreline and lush tropical scenery, the image showcases the peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty of one of the Loyalty Islands’ most charming coastal spots. A real postcard setting with its white sand and crystal-clear water, Mouli beach is the epitome of idleness.
Scuba diving in the Isle of Pines
Our team is here at the Office de Tourisme to help you make the most of your time in New Caledonia. Knowing the 2 tank dive trip is at 15,400 CFP (about 129€ / £116), this is an excellent deal. While I want to tell you to visit every island if time allows, from a scuba diver’s perspective I’d like to advise you to go to the Isle of Pines in priority.

Unfortunately, although the situation was much better than in Ouvea, at the time of my visit, the owner was in the process of selling the dive centre, bringing uncertainty for the future. When you book through the tourism board, you get a special price on a package including flights and accommodation in a homestay. I dived there twice, with an average maximum depth from 27 to 30m, and a bottom time of 56 minutes each time. You can still explore the beautiful island of Ouvea, but for the underwater part, just join the snorkelling tour with Pierre in the Southern Pleiades Islands (contact Ouvea tourism board, 7,500 CFP about 63€ / £57). In 2 dives, I could spot 2 manta rays, a stingray, 3 nurse sharks, and a couple of reef sharks and white-tip sharks, including one that was ‘pregnant’ (depending on the species, sharks are viviparous or oviviparous, but they are not mammals!). I’ve been lucky to scuba dive with manta rays in Indonesia, Hawaii and Egypt, and every time it was a special moment.

Calm waters, dramatic dark cliffs and an open horizon create a striking scene that highlights the wild beauty of New Caledonia’s east coast. A picture-perfect setting with its white sand and crystal-clear water, it embodies the Loyalty Islands’ gentler pace of life. Lively by day and by night, the bays offer plenty to see and do, including beaches, shopping, water sports, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, taxi boats to the islands and walks.
On 24 June 2025, President Emmanuel Macron extended an invitation to both pro‑ and anti‑independence leaders from New Caledonia to participate in talks in Paris starting 2 July 2025, aimed at negotiating the territory’s future governance and status. Under the Nouméa Accord, signed in 1998 following a period of secessionist unrest in the 1980s and approved in a referendum, New Caledonia was granted special status. The air component includes two Écureuil helicopters while the Maritime Gendarmerie deploys the patrol boat Dumbea in the territory.
Due to the shortages of materials during World War II, the period of makeup is considered the “natural beauty” look. Female supporters of early pin-up content considered these to be a “positive post-Victorian rejection of bodily shame and a healthy respect for female beauty.” The counterpart of the pin-up girl is the male pin-up, also known as beefcake, including celebrated actors and athletes such as the actor James Dean, the singer Jim Morrison, and the model Fabio. And that quiet… the kind you don’t find just anywhere. With its white-sand beaches, vibrant markets, waterfront dining, stunning lagoon sunsets and unique blend of city life and nature, New Caledonia’s capital has countless ways to win you over.

In 2017, Kanaks were 5.1 times less likely to earn a baccalauréat général and 8.3 times less likely to have a college degree than their Caldoche counterparts.
